FILOSOFI KOPI

01 — CREATIVE

We have a very open brief from our good friend at Visinema. The brief was practically is to do whatever we want as long as it looks cool. Sounds like a dream job? It is!

The film main storyline revolve around the journey of yellow-centric van exploring the universe of Filosofi Kopi The Series episodes.

The iconic van serves as the main hero exploring important key elements of the series. We are allowed to use absurd visual cues without revealing too much of the story, all while finding a link to the film-makers role while we're at it.

02 — ART & DESIGN

We tried to developed custom NPR shaders in order to emulate 2D cel-animated look, painterly strokes, and watercolor  textures.

The reason we chose this art direction is due to the fact that this whole series involved a lot of love and hand-written feel to it. Our goal was to create the most iconic and stylized look that last for (hopefully) years with a strong personality.

03 — MOTION

We took reference from old racing car footage alongside 90s Japanese car illustrations.  From there, we animate the van, camera, and stroke effect in 12 FPS. Depending on which scene we are in, sometimes we even lower  the frame rates just to get a more "cel-animated" look.

The key challenges of this is to make it looks as painterly and hand-crafted as much as possible without the audience ever realized that it is all done in CGI. It is quite challenging to avoid being predictable with the result, but after couple of trial and errors, we thought the overall motion ends up being artistic and starkly iconic.
